How to Read Football Odds
Decimal odds are the return on a winning stake, including the stake. A price of 2.50 means a 1.00 stake returns 2.50 if it wins.
The implied chance is 1 divided by that price. The bookmaker margin (the overround) is what is left when those implied chances add up to more than 100%.

Decimal odds
The number is a return, not a probability
Higher decimal odds pay more, and they imply a smaller chance. Lower decimal odds pay less, and they imply a larger chance.
| Decimal price | Stake | Return if it wins | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.00 | 1.00 | 2.00 | 1.00 |
| 4.00 | 1.00 | 4.00 | 3.00 |
Example only. These are round numbers for the arithmetic, not a fixture and not a SportyBet price.
Implied probability
Divide 1 by the decimal price
That is the raw implied chance. It still includes the bookmaker's margin, so a set of raw chances usually adds up to more than 100%.
- 1 / 2.00 = 0.50, which is 50%.
- 1 / 4.00 = 0.25, which is 25%.
- 1 / 1.50 = 0.667, which is 66.7%.
Overround
The margin is the bit above 100%
Add the raw implied chances. Subtract 100%. What is left is the overround, also called the margin or vig. To take it out, divide each raw chance by the total, so the results add up to 100%.
Worked example: match result (made-up numbers)
Example only. Home 2.10, Draw 3.40, Away 3.60. These prices are not a real match, not a SportyBet price, and not a pick.
- Home: 1 / 2.10 = 47.6%
- Draw: 1 / 3.40 = 29.4%
- Away: 1 / 3.60 = 27.8%
- Total: 104.8%. The margin is 4.8 percentage points.
Divide each raw chance by 1.048 (the prices actually sum to about 1.0481 before rounding). Implied from odds, bookmaker margin removed, rounded to one decimal: Home 45.4%, Draw 28.1%, Away 26.5%. Those add back to 100%.
Worked example: over 2.5 goals (made-up numbers)
Example only. Over 2.5 at 1.80, Under 2.5 at 2.00. Not a real fixture.
- Over 2.5: 1 / 1.80 = 55.6%
- Under 2.5: 1 / 2.00 = 50.0%
- Total: 105.6%. The margin is 5.6 percentage points.
The unrounded fractions are 10/19 and 9/19. Implied from odds, bookmaker margin removed: Over 2.5 is 52.6% and Under 2.5 is 47.4%. In this example the prices lean Over 2.5. That lean is only the bookmaker's price with the margin taken out. It is not a prediction.

FAQ
Reading the prices
What do decimal odds mean?
+
Decimal odds are the full return on a winning stake, including the stake. At 2.50, a 1.00 stake returns 2.50 if it wins (1.50 profit plus the 1.00 stake).
How do you turn decimal odds into a probability?
+
Divide 1 by the decimal price. At 2.00 the raw implied chance is 50%. At 4.00 it is 25%. That figure still includes the bookmaker's margin.
What is overround?
+
Add the raw implied chances for every outcome in a market. If they add up to more than 100%, the extra is the overround, also called the margin or vig. It is how the book is priced above a fair 100%.
Does removing the margin make a prediction?
+
No. Margin-free chances describe the price, with the bookmaker's cut taken out. They are not a forecast, and they are not a pick.
Where can I see this on a real fixture?
+
SportyPunter match pages show 1X2 chances from the live SportyBet prices with the margin removed, when that market is on the board. Analysed picks stay behind sign-in. Browse /matches.
